How to build a gym habit that actually sticks
Why motivation is not enough
I'll be honest with you. Motivation is what gets you to the gym on day one. You feel pumped, you put on your training gear, you show up and train. Great. But motivation will not get you there on day 30. Or day 60. What gets you there is having a system. And most people don't have a system. They have desire, which is not the same thing.
The three mistakes I see constantly are these:
One: going too hard in the first week. Five consecutive days when you haven't set foot in a gym in months. Your body pays the price, your mind associates "gym" with "pain", and you stop going. As simple as that.
Two: not having a fixed time. If every day you ask yourself "should I go today", the answer will be "not today" most of the time. Without a fixed time there is no possible habit.
Three: measuring the wrong thing. If you measure your progress by kilos lost or lifted, the first months will frustrate you. Measure something else: how many times you showed up. Full stop.
The 3-step system that actually works
Step 1: set a specific time. Not "in the morning". 7:15. Or 18:00. A time you can repeat. People who train at the same time every day find it much easier to maintain the habit long term. That's just how it works.
Step 2: link it to something you already do. "After dropping the kids at school, I go to the gym." "Before showering in the afternoon, I train for half an hour." The trick is to use something you already do every day as the trigger for the new habit.
Step 3: record whether you went, not how it went. Take a calendar and put an X on every day you show up. You need nothing more. No weights logged, no sets. Just the X. When you have 30 Xs in a row you'll feel that this is yours. And it will be.
The 2-day rule
It's very simple: never let more than 2 consecutive days pass without going to the gym. One rest day is fine, it's necessary. Two days can slide. But three consecutive days without going is where habits start to break down.
If you reach the third day and don't feel like it, go anyway. Even if it's just 15 minutes. Even if you just walk on the treadmill and leave. The goal that day is not the workout. It's protecting the chain.
Living here makes it easier
In Mijas you have sunshine more than 300 days a year. You can get to the gym walking, cycling or driving in 10 minutes. The environment doesn't put obstacles in your way. It removes them. Gym Triple X opens at 6am Monday to Friday. Find your time and don't let it go.
